The earth was barren and devoid of all plants when Rauni came down from heaven and took the form of a Rowan tree. Rauni’s union with Ukko, the God of Thunder, resulted in the creation of all the plants of the earth. According to this ancient creation myth all plants and trees are descended from the Rowan tree as a result of it having been struck by a mighty bolt of magical lightning.

Outside the windows of my home on my Island I see the rowan trees with their white blossoms in the Spring and their deep red berries in the Autumn.
The Rowan or Mountain Ash Tree was the first tree to populate Scandinavia’s flora after the Ice Age. It has been considered a protection against ills in Nordic mythology and symbolizes Mother Earth or Rauni, as she is called.
Rauni by Julie Lindahl is a small series of accessories celebrating the earth, its peoples and you. All products are hand-made, bringing a unique look to each piece. The series is inspired by the Finnish earth goddess, Rauni. The wearer of a Rauni product communicates solidarity with the earth and and personal strength through care for onesself.
